Great views the whole way. This 8.8 roundtrip hike leaves at the Bear Lake Trailhead and is mostly all uphill with 3,000 ft elevation gain. The trail gained 2000 feet of elevation in 2 1/2 miles, so there were some pretty steep parts that burned the calves, but nothing too radical. You can also start this trail at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead.
Awesome hike. You can also get to the lake via the Bierstadt Lake trailhead which crosses from the Glacier Basin Park and Ride lot however its a little more of a climb that way. This is the first lake in a three lake series which we did for a nice day hike totaling 3.6 miles roundtrip. I went to Bear Mountain and saw a bunch of nature.Like bushes,trees,and,moss.I almost made it to the top (2 miles up) but I got blisters on my feet. Very challenging trail. It’s not shaded at all, and pretty steep in some areas. I was a little worried about the level 5 difficulty but it wasn’t too bad at all. The trail immediately becomes steep and rocky. Make sure you go to the far end on the lake where there is a small waterfall coming off the steep mountainside. Not many others on the trail. I love these views – they’re brilliant. It seemed to me there were a few false summits before reaching the real top.
